• Which doctors do you need to see when you’re pregnant?

Pregnancy and childbirth are some of the most exciting times in a woman’s life, but navigating healthcare options can be confusing at times. That’s why MountainView Hospital offers a complete spectrum of prenatal care and maternity health services to give your growing family the personalized care you deserve. At our hospital in Las Vegas, you might work with a few different healthcare providers during your pregnancy.

Many women choose to receive prenatal care from an obstetrician or obstetrician-gynecologist (OBGYN). Obstetricians are specialists in women’s health. They provide expert prenatal care, childbirth services and postpartum healthcare.

Seeing an obstetrician is particularly advantageous for women with high-risk pregnancies, and those who experience complications during labor and delivery. Choosing an obstetrician offers the following benefits:

    • Specialized training to diagnose and treat complications during pregnancy

    • Specialized surgical training to perform C-sections

    • Ability to facilitate childbirth with interventions when needed

    Certified Nurse Midwives

As an alternative to seeing an OBGYN, you might choose to see a Certified Nurse Midwife. Midwives provide a holistic model of care that addresses all aspects of a woman’s health. A midwife can offer:

    • Preconception counseling

    • Prenatal education

    • Labor and delivery services

    • Lactation support

    • Nutritional guidance

    • Newborn care

    • Postpartum care

Although midwives are highly trained and certified healthcare providers, they may not be the right choice for every expecting mother. A midwife may refer you to an OBGYN if you have a high-risk pregnancy.

Midwives can also work closely with the obstetrics team in the hospital, so if there is a complication during labor, the midwife may turn over your care to an obstetrician.

    Lactation consultant

It’s customary for new moms who wish to breastfeed to see a lactation consultant shortly after childbirth. However, you could choose to receive lactation counseling before birth, as well. Lactation consultants might not be licensed doctors, but they are certified professionals who can help you prepare for a successful breastfeeding experience.
